The Phantom of the Opera
The Great Britain audios of the Phantom of the Opera
Sydmonton - 1st show (July 1985)
July 1985; Sydmonton, UK*
Colm Wilkinson (Phantom), Sarah Brightman (Kristin), Clive Carter (Raoul), Myra Sands (Carlotta), Jeff Shankley (André), David Burt (Firmin), Jacque Harman (Meg), Christopher Beck (Buquet/Porter), Paul Leonard (José Qaniussi/Jailer/Don Nero), Ken Kaswall (Auctioneer/Prisoner)
Early version of act 1 showed to invited people in Webber's estate. Apparently copied from the infamous video or one of its 'close relatives' from the same branch. While the video have horrible picture and ok sound, in this audio the sound is horrible as well.

Second preview of the original production, the earliest know recording of the complete show. Good quality for it's age. Came to me dated as 26 Sept., but as far as I know Christine was played by Rebecca Cain, so many traders date it as 27 Sept.

Michael Crawford (Phantom), Maria Kesselman (u/s Christine), Steve Barton (Raoul)
SOUNDBOARD highlights, ~32 minutes. Quite strange set of highlights and it's not oriented at Kesselman as one (me) might expect, it includes: Overture from the early 1986 LP, part of TOM (after "I remember her"), from the Mirror to MOTN (omitting most of "I have brought), All I Ask (both), 30 seconds of Wishing, most of PONR and half of the Final Lair (from " this is the choice" till the end except a bit of cut pieces). Not bad sound in general but has a bit of that nasty tendency to be overloaded. Also it seems that during the high E the recorder went... to a different mode? And that caused some echo but it switches back to normal right after that part. Still, this is the best chance to hear Maria Kesselman in the role, also Crawford gives somewhat unusual performance.

Richard Halton/Alan Vicary (Phantom s/b & u/s), Deborah Dutcher (Christine), Matthew Cammelle (Raoul)
Received it with Vicary listed as the Phantom only but it's definitely not so. All I can say for sure is that prerecorded parts of the first act belong to Halton, while the prerecorded parts for act 2 belong to someone else (with Vicary being the prime suspect). Can't say for sure about parts performed live though. So there are 3 options: Halton played the Phantom in act 1 and Vicary was in act 2; sound director messed up and played Halton's prerecorded parts in the act 1 instead of Vicary's; sound director messed up and played Vicary's parts in act 2 instead of Halton's. Decent audio though a bit quite. Some random noises sometimes, probably a digital issue.

Good audio with an historic flub which absolutely ruined the title song. It started only with live half of the orchestra while the prerecorded one was absent, when the live orchestra finished its entrance and only prerecorded part supposed to be heard there was silence, after a few seconds prerecorded orchestra appeared as well but prerecorded voices did not! You can barely hear the Phantom stuntman trying to sing louder than the music to fill the gap without a mic. The chorus was not heard as well but they switched on Secomb's mic so he could sing the last couplet live but Jones's mic was switched on only at the beginning of the cadenza (and judging by the fact that it is not ideal, I'm pretty sure she sang it live, what a professionalism!) and during cadenza the prerecorded orchestra faded again for a few seconds.

Paul Monaghan (Phantom u/s), Nikki Ankarra (Christine), Richard Burman (Raoul)
Definitely in bottom-5 of audios in my collection in terms of quality. It's hard to imagine but I think initially it was a pretty decent recording but the generation loss made it even worse than the Sydmonton audio. Still, the only way to hear Monaghan's Phantom as far as I'm aware.

The sound is somewhat overloaded. As far as I understand, McLaughlin was the principal André, not understudy.
